It seems that NFC on Axon7 7.1.1 B02 is partially broken. The phone can detect few different tags, but not the daydream View headset NFC Tag (MifareUltraLight Nfca,Ndef - ISO 14443-3A).
my other phones with NFC chip can detect the headset without any problem (so the daydream view’s NFC Tag works well) and the Axon7 can detect other things without any problem (credit card, etc..) so the NFC Chip seems to works well too …
So .. a firmware issue ?
22. April 2017 um 11:41 #7147I think it has to do with the NFC tag in the Daydream headset itself. My Axon 7 detects it when i hold it directly against the front of headset trying different positions. But never in the position it has when inserting it correctly.
Not a great problem for me, because i always leave the front open when daydreaming so that the smartphone doesn’t get too hot.
Maybe i’ll try to copy the content of the original NFC tag to another one and then stick this to an appropriate position on the headset.

22. April 2017 um 14:39 #7157The NFC is positioned around the camera hole on the inside of the rear cover.
Ergonomically this is the ideal position for NFC payment, as you only have to bend your hand in a natural way.
Google Daydream headsets are made for old fashioned Nexus or Pixel smartphones with centered NFCs and not yet state of the art ;-)
22. April 2017 um 15:05 #7159The problem is not the position… I can easily detect the headset NFC tag with another phone with NFC tool. I have tried all the position with the axon 7 and NFC Tool on the headset and it can’t detect the tag. But the same axon 7 can detect systematically other tag (credit card or other).
22. April 2017 um 17:08 #7164Would be interesting to find the reason why.
SchlesiM can read the Daydream tag and several others do as well.I do not use Daydream, because it is still in kind of alpha stage and not mature enough to really enjoy it.
Google’s plastic toy headset is quite ridiculous. The Axon has all neccessary libs inside, so it should be no problem to read the NXD tags.
The only issue with NFC I had with positioning. That’s why I mentioned the position inside the Axon7.
22. April 2017 um 20:10 #7174It seems that detection is finally working only on the outside textile part of the headset’s flip case (not inside over the plastic).
Very strange … :)
22. April 2017 um 22:03 #7188You should compare reading distances with several NFC tags to different smartphones.
If the NFC inside is not properly working and there is a considerable difference to other smartphones with alloy rear cover, it might be a warranty case.

Google’s plastic toy headset is quite ridiculous. In my opinion Daydreams works very well. The headset is lightweight and comfortable to wear (i’m using it up to 2 hours without taking it off) and doesn’t need annoying cables like other systems. And there are more and more really good DD-games coming up (e.g. Virtual Virtual Reality, Need for Speed, The Other Room, and of course Eclipse: Edge of Light). And of course watching 360° videos is great.
I’m pretty sure we’ll see lots of interesting DD stuff in the future if more and more smartphones will be DD ready. And yes: the Axon 7 already is (no overheating like the Pixel and the front speakers are just perfect for daydreaming without headphones). Ok - you have to leave the front open to prevent overheating, but that’s not a big problem.

Google’s plastic toy headset is quite ridiculous. The only Daydream View headset’s problem is the Field Of View of 90° which is too short. Except this problem, the headset is VERY comfortable and doesn’t produce ANY fog at all due to materials used (not only plastic !) and it’s very well made. I have tested a lot of headsets including gear VR, oculus and vive and the fog is everywhere.
But the greatest thing of the Daydream system is its controller (which is simply a Wiimote „like“ gyropad). Coupled with the FreeFlyVR headset (FOV of 120°) it’s great (except for the FOG of the freefly).
And Axon 7’s heat while using daydream is normal. i can use daydream apps and games during hours without any problem.

24. April 2017 um 7:58 #7433100% agree with that: the controller is great (despite it has to be recalibrated quite often, which is very easy and you quickly get used to it).
And temperatures are inevitable because of the CPU’s heavy load during Daydream sessions. But: my highest temperatures yet (front open, sometimes additional cold/warm compress attached to absorb heat :-) ) were 56° for the CPU and 45° for the battery (with the front closed it will rise higher). Which is absolutely OK (my wife’s LG G4 usually gets a lot hotter when used normaly - without Daydream). But it depends on the Daydream apps. There are a lot of them where the temperatures usually are lower, even after 2 hours of daydreaming (e.g. with Eclipse).
According to users feedbacks the Google Pixel seems to get significantly hotter during Daydream sessions. And has no front speakers, so that the Axon would be the better choice für Daydream.

23. Mai 2017 um 16:41 #9044Just copy the nfc tag with a nfc tool app and paste it to another nfc tag/sticker which you place into the Headset. I did that and have no problems with nfc for Daydream anymore it detects it everytime just be sure that the nfc tag is near the camera from the Axon7.
24. Mai 2017 um 15:39 #9064I’ve tried several Times to read the NFC Tag with my Axon 7. Even when I take the NFC tag out of the DD View to put it directly on the smartphone, it wasn’t possible.
Anyway, as u can see on the picture below, I removed the Front of the Daydream View. The Tag is in the inside of the front.
No need for the NFC Tag. The tag is just for Autostart the Daydream App AFAIK. Start NFC an the DD App by Hand and it works. Am I right?

24. Mai 2017 um 15:46 #9066Yeah the tag is just for autostart the daydream app, but as i already said you can copy the tag in the Headset and paste it to another tag which you can place into the Headset
